College Scholarships

A college scholarship is monies that are directly applied to a students’ educational costs. Scholarships are similar to grants in this respect. However, scholarships are awarded more for merit, where students achievements are required to be at a certain level, which is defined by the scholarship sponsors. Grants tend to be awarded based on financial need.

Scholarships are basically monetary awards given for excellence in some field which is determined by a scholarship sponsoring committee. Thus, a scholarship generally can be applied solely for the school that the sponsor reviewed. It is also implied that you’ll complete your academic pursuit and hopefully apply your education for a better future, not only for yourself.

Scholarships are awarded in various amounts, and are primarily offered through colleges and universities. They can also be offered by various types of sponsors, from the civic to the highly unusual. The bulk of scholarships go to students who demonstrate a certain level of academic, artistic, and/or athletic potential. Some scholarships are open to individuals of all income levels; others might be more specific to talented applicants, who are at some sort of disadvantage – like minority students or students with disabilities.

If you, or a family member, has an association with a particular trade or cultural society, this organization may offer scholarships for which you are qualified. For example, The Two Ten Foundation offers scholarships to students who have some affiliation with the footwear industry. Someone who is simply a child of a long-time footwear industry employee would qualify to apply for these scholarships. Then there are scholarships which are geared towards students who will be enrolling in certain professional programs. Healthcare, environmental science, music and dance are just some of the programs that might give one a chance at these types of scholarships.

Actually, there are thousands of scholarships offered annually by colleges, universities, non-profit organizations, and private companies. These scholarships seek out students who show a desire and commitment to excel. Scholarship applications may ask that students demonstrate these characteristics in a variety of ways. They may require a well written essay, an art or film portfoliio, a history of dedicated community service, documentation of an extraordinary ability to overcome adversity, etc. It would be wise for you to devote some time to researching scholarships and, then, apply for whichever ones you qualify for.
