Online Degrees Part 1: Why you should Study Online

on April 6, 2012

The blogosphere is full of people banging on about how student debt is the next financial crisis. Queue lots of worrying statistics and comparisons with the Book of Revelation. Hell, even us at EduGrant got involved. So what are we to do? What alternatives are there to our broken system?

Well, a popular alternative is to get your degree from an online degree program. They are run by traditional universities or they are offered by a newfangled online-only university.

So is it a good idea? In this article we will be looking at the reasons for studying online. Our next post will detail the negatives. Then you can use your highly educated minds to make an informed decision.

It’s Cheaper

This is a no brainer. You save money on books, living costs and tuition fees.

More Flexible

Most students work full-time and study part-time to support themselves. Traditional courses have inflexible schedules which can make it hard to earn money and make ends meet. Online courses allow you to allocate your study time in way that fits your schedule.

No Fixed End Date

All online courses let you work at your own pace and give you large windows to fulfill the requirements for your course. Some online universities allow up to six years for a Phd course.

Accessible

Everything you need to be successful is accessible from your computer – no walks to the library in the rain only to find the last book has just been taken out.

Connection with an International Faculty and Peer Base

Online courses do not have to be isolating. All courses have forums and connectivity between students and faculty. Because they are international you will be put in touch with a wide variety of talented people and make connections you would never be able to make at a physical college.
